Product Review: Oculus Quest All-in-one VR Gaming Headset

Let’s be honest. Virtual Reality hasn’t taken off quite as quickly as we thought it would when it first came to market in the early 2000s. While there is still a long way to go, we think the Oculus Quest is a step in the right direction, with all the features to back that up.

What is the Oculus Quest?

The Oculus Quest is a totally standalone VR headset. Unlike many devices on the market, it doesn’t need a clunky PC or iPhone to connect. In fact, it is completely mobile, without any wires to get in the way. At a reasonable price-point of less than $550 on Amazon, it’s the perfect product for someone hoping to enter the world of virtual reality. And with many people stuck in isolation, it’s never been a better time to invest.

What’s included in the pack?

The Oculus Quest comes with everything you need to get started including:
  • The Oculus Quest Headset
  • Two Touch Controllers
  • 15W Power Adaptor
  • Frame Friendly Spacer
  • AA Batteries

What’s so impressive about the Oculus Quest?

Easy set-up It only takes a few minutes to launch with a simple set-up process that can be synced with your Facebook profile. Convenience You don't need any additional equipment to use it. In fact, everything you'll ever need to run the Oculus Quest is in the box itself.  Lightweight Measuring 120mm x 110mm, the Oculus Quest is surprisingly compact and lightweight making it easy to transport from place to place.  Insight tracking The Oculus Quest tracks your movements in any direction, without needing external sensors so you can swing, duck, twist and dance away without getting tangled up in wires.  Beyond room scale The device works with your environment, so you can play standing or sitting, in spaces big or small (perfect for those living in an apartment).

How does Oculus Quest tracking work?

Oculus Insight, the new tracking technology from Oculus, is capable of scanning all items in your virtual space, including floors, ceilings, walls, rugs, art, windows, and curtains, for an accurate representation of your room in the real world. It looks for edges and corners and other distinctive features, then builds a 3D map of the play space and combines that data with data from the gyroscope and accelerometer to give the headset's position once every millisecond.

What are the controllers like?

The Oculus Touch controllers have motion, haptic feedback and finger motion sensing technology which creates realistic reactions in the virtual world. The only thing that disappointed us is the fact that the controllers require batteries, instead of just plugging in to charge, which means you will have to stock up on AA batteries to keep the controllers running.

What games can you play on Oculus Quest?

The Oculus Quest has an impressive library of games, with over 50 apps at launch. Shooting games are especially immersive due to the slick touch controllers. And the headset lends itself well to anything with a sword or saber.  One thing we’re particularly impressed by is the range of motion-based games such as Dance Central and Racquet Fury which are fast, fun and will make you break a sweat in your living room. They are great examples of how well Quest can simulate action games, especially when gyms and sport facilities are closed due to the pandemic.

The Final Verdict

The Oculus Quest isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty damn close. It’s convenient, immersive, affordable and fun, which is exactly what virtual reality needs to succeed.
